Following another horrendous outing for Steven Matz on Thursday night the New York Mets are leaving open the opportunity to skip his next start.

Matz allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks in 3.1 innings to raise his season ERA to 6.08. The Mets have only won one of his last nine starts.

After his latest rough outing, manager Terry Collins left open the possibility of skipping Steven’s next start.

“We have absolutely wrung the rag dry with ideas,’’ manager Terry Collins said of himself, pitching coach Dan Warthen and bullpen coach Ricky Bones. “You saw in the first inning all his fastballs were up in the zone. I think you should be able to step off the mound and take 10 seconds and say, ‘Hey, I’ve been here before, what did I do to correct it?’ And then correct it, and make better pitches.”

Over his last nine starts, Matz is 0-6 with a 10.16 ERA and opponents are slashing .385/.432/.622 against him during that span. Matz is frustrated and knows just how bad he’s been, saying “it sucks to suck.”

His next scheduled start would come on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks who are fourth in the National League with 4.91 runs per game.
