Joel Sherman and Mike Puma of the New York Post have reported that the New York Mets could show interest in Dave Eiland for their pitching coach vacancy.
The Mets fired pitching coach Dan Warthen who had been with the organization starting in June of 2008.
Eiland, 51, was told by the Royals earlier this week that he would not be back with the team for the 2018 season after Kansas City finished the year with a 4.61 ERA.
Eiland had been the Royals pitching coach since being hired in October of 2011 and before that was the New Yankees pitching coach for three seasons. He also pitched in the big leagues in part of ten seasons until he retired after the 2000 season.
In all three seasons that Eiland was the Yankees pitching coach the hitting coach was Kevin Long. Long of course has been the Mets hitting coach since 2015 and is reportedly a serious candidate for the managerial opening.
Eiland said this when the Post asked him about his strong bond and relationship with Long, ““You are not wrong at all. That is very accurate.”
