In the night cap of Wednesday’s doubleheader at PNC Park, the New York Mets trounced the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 10-0. The Mets offense provided plenty of run support for Jacob deGrom, which is an uncommon occurrence for the Mets’ ace.

DeGrom took the mound for the first time in seven days since earning the win against the Dodgers on August 31. With Wednesday night’s win, deGrom picked up his third straight victory. deGrom has allowed one earned run or less in five of seven starts since returning from the injured list.

The Mets bats were patient in the second inning, drawing four walks against Johan Oviedo. The hard-throwing righty had trouble finding the zone all inning. Mark Canha crossed the plate for the first Mets run after Brandon Nimmo walked with the bases loaded. With Pete Alonso up to bat, Eduardo Escobar scored on a wild pitch before Alonso drew a walk. Francisco Lindor poked a 2-RBI ground ball down the right field line, bringing the Mets to an early 4-0 lead.

The Mets offense never looked back. They piled the runs onto the Pirates. Perhaps this was built-up frustration after scoring only four runs in the previous three games leading up to the doubleheader. Or it could be that the offense is just returning to its form we’ve seen over the bulk of the season. Either way, the Mets needed a game like this to get back on track.

The Pirates’ offense couldn’t rally a run against the two-time Cy Young Award winner. DeGrom matched his season-high in innings pitched with seven on the night. It marks his second straight start with seven innings pitched. His final line included 3 hits, 1 walk, and 8 strikeouts.

DeGrom’s presence has been felt in a short amount of time for the Mets this year. They’re going to be relying on him to continue his significant efforts. He now owns a 1.66 ERA this season.

The Mets’ ace has a chance to hold a new consecutive streak of allowing three earned runs or less in MLB history.

Six different Mets’ hitters recorded at least one RBI in the game. Lindor led the way with three and Jeff McNeil picked up a pair of them.

They combined for 17 hits and 7 walks, scoring a total of 10 runs. Even with the 10 runs scored, they left 26 runners on base. Alonso, Lindor, McNeil, Canha, Naquin and Escobar all had multi-hit games. Escobar led the night with four hits, all singles. It was the third time Escobar recorded four hits in a game for the Mets this season. The last time coming when he hit for the cycle against the Dodgers on June 6.

Escobar has really been heating up over the past week. He’s smacked three home runs in the past six games.

Player of the Game: Francisco Lindor

Lindor led the way with his 3 RBIs in the nightcap. He doubled from both sides of the plate, the first hit the other way on a grounder down the right field line, and the second double coming off a laser to deep center field that ricocheted off of Bryan Reynolds glove. Lindor’s final line – 3-4, 2 2B, 1 BB, 3 RBI.
