With their season finale loss on Sunday, the New York Mets finished 74-88 in 2026. With that, attention quickly turns to the offseason.
One of the most integral parts of any offseason is preparation for the MLB Draft. The 2027 edition of the draft is slated for July of 2027. The draft order will be set via a lottery that is set to take place in December. The Mets’ final game of the season may have been meaningless for the two teams playing in terms of playoff hopes, however, it meant a ton for where New York may select in the draft.
Entering Sunday, a Mets’ loss guaranteed them taking home the fifth-best odds in December’s draft lottery. What is important about that is if that pick ends up in the top-six, New York will get to keep it there instead of seeing it drop 10 spots. If that pick falls outside the top-six, it drops 10 positions due to luxury tax penalties.
The fifth-best odds in the lottery specifically bring a 62.6% chance at a top-six pick and an 8.68% at the No. 1 overall pick according to Tankathon. Obtaining a pick within the top-six will help the Mets quicken their timeline to return to consistent competitiveness. Hopefully, the luck will be on their side come December.
