The New York Mets today announced that the club has claimed infielder Yolmer Sánchez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. In addition, catcher Patrick Mazeika has been designated for assignment. Sánchez is out of minor league options.

Sánchez, 30, was designated for assignment by Boston on August 16. He appeared in 14 games for the Red Sox this season, making 12 starts at second base. He has played in 672 games over his eight-year major league career with Chicago-AL (2014-2020) and Boston (2022), including 428 appearances at second base, 204 games at third base, and 16 games at shortstop.

Sánchez won the Gold Glove in 2019 for American League at second base. He has 11 defensive runs saved at second base in his career and 12 defensive runs saved at third base in his career.

At the plate, Sánchez went 4-for-37 with the Red Sox this season. For his career, the Venezuelan is a .243/.299/.350 hitter in 2500 plate appearances.

Mazeika, 28, has a .519 OPS over the last two seasons on the big leagues for the Mets.
