The New York Mets announced on Friday evening that they’ve claimed left-handed pitcher Buddy Baumann off waivers from the San Diego Padres. To make room for him on the 40-man roster the Mets moved David Wright to the 60-day disabled list.
Baumann, 30, has pitched in only one major league game this season allowing two earned runs and getting one out. In 6.2 Triple-A innings this year he had yet to allow a run on two hits, five walks and nine strikeouts.
The former seventh round pick has a 3.58 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 10.1 K/9 in 27.2 major league innings that spreads over three seasons for the Padres.
Of note, in his brief major league career he has held lefties to a .163/.321/.256 slash line in 54 plate appearances.
Baumann is a three-pitch guy that averages 90 mph on his fastball while mixing in a slider and changeup. He becomes only the second left-handed reliever alongside the struggling Jerry Blevins on the 40-man roster.
