The New York Mets announced on Tuesday afternoon that they have claimed infielder Travis Blankenhorn off of waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

He has been added to the 26-man roster and will join the team in Arizona for their Tuesday night matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks wearing No. 73.

With the addition of Blankenhorn, the Mets designated infielder Wilfredo Tovar for assignment. Tovar’s second stint in the Mets organization didn’t workout quite as planned for him.

The 29-year old got into six games for the injury-riddle Mets, and picked up just two hits over 11 at-bats. He also hit a meager .206, but did record a .349 OBP in 10 games with Triple-A Syracuse.

Blankenhorn was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the third round of the 2015 MLB draft at the No. 80 overall pick. He was a member of the 2018 Florida State League Champion Fort Myers Miracle, and made his MLB debut in September of 2020 with the Twins.

Blankenhorn split the 2019 season between Advanced-A Fort Myers and Double-A Pensacola. Between those two levels, he batted .277/.321/.466, with a .787 OPS. He hit 22 doubles, had 19 home runs, and 54 RBI in his successful 2019 season.

In his only appearance at the Major League level in 2020, Blankenhorn was 1-for-3 with a double.

He was designated for assignment by the Twins last month and was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers, later to be followed by the Mariners, before being selected by the Twins on Tuesday.

So far in 2021 between St. Paul, Oklahoma City, and Tacoma, he has batted .206/.250/.324, which is good enough for a .574 OPS. Blankenhorn is known for having power behind his swing and his ability to get on base.

A video from Mariners Minors shows the 24-year old launching a 3-run home run earlier this month.

He is a 3-time mid-season All-Star and a 2019 Post-Season All-Star. Though he doesn’t have much experience at the Major League level, Blankenhorn is still just 24-years old, and could be a strong addition to the ‘Bench-Mob.’
