In one giant missed opportunity in which the cross town rival Yankees pulverized the division leading Washington Nationals, the Reds came in and completed the three-game sweep, besting the Amazin’s by a final score of 3-1.

Chris Young took the hill for his turn in the rotation, trying to avoid the sweep for New York. He started off the day relatively dominant, putting up goose eggs over the first four frames while allowing only three hits over that time. Then in the fifth after retiring the first two batters, Young fell on hard times. After giving up a double to Zack Cozart, young allowed three more batters to reach base including a throwing error on a Brandon Phillips single by Duda that scored two to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Young finished with a final line of seven innings pitched, surrendering three runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks while punching out two, taking the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year.

The Amazin’s continued to make the opposing pitcher look incredible as they only got six hits and one run while Johnny Cueto was on the mound. Striking out nine times on the day, the Mets offense looked like a deer in a headlight despite whoever the Reds ran out there.

The Mets only got to Johnny Cueto in the second when Chris Young drew a two-out, bases loaded walk to score Ike Davis with the only Met-run of the game. Kirk Nieuwenhuis struck out to end the inning, once of two times that he was punched out today.

Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco cashed in a scoreless frame each but their efforts were in vain as the lineup could not stage a comeback, allowing for the completion of the three game sweep and falling to just three games over .500 on the year. Their only consolation they can take is that the Nationals lost their past three games as well, allowing for the Amazin’s to remain 4.5 games back in the NL East.

Notes:

Chris Young took the loss despite pitching very well, his first since June 14th, 2009.

Ike Davis went 1-3 on the day, extending his hitting streak to eight games.

The Mets failed to have an extra-base hit today, ending a streak of roughly 40 games

Josh Thole was the sole met with a multi-hit game going 2-4 in the loss

Up Next:

The Mets will send Cy-Young contender R.A. Dickey to the hill to open up their second series of this nine-game homestand as they take on Jake Arrieta and the Baltimore Orioles.
