With a taxed bullpen, the Mets have called for help. Right-hander Tim Peterson is answering the call, joining the team from Triple-A.
Peterson, 27, has never appeared in a Major League game despite solid minor league numbers. He has appeared in 22 games in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this season, pitching to a respectable 3.58 ERA and impressive 0.940 WHIP in 27.2 innings. He has struck out 40, walked eight, and allowed 18 hits.
He has very good numbers across his career, the entirety of which has been in the Mets organization since he was picked in the 20th round of the 2012 draft. He has a 3.17 ERA, 1.082 WHIP, 10.5 K/9, and 4.50 K/BB across 301.1 innings.
The righty throws a fastball that sits 88-92 mph with good sinking action. He throws over the top with a good curveball and is known for his ability to command his pitches, keeping them down in the zone. The result of which is a great 0.7 HR/9 ratio across his minor league career.
The Mets bullpen is hanging by a thread after an early exit by Steven Matz from Tuesday’s game. Further, as Jason Vargas is pitching on short rest (and has nary been effective), it’s safe to assume the bullpen will be leaned on again in tonight’s game.
