To accommodate calling up lefty Tyler Jay on the 40-man roster, the Mets announced Wednesday they’ve transferred Kodai Senga to the 60-day IL. To make room on the active roster, the Mets optioned Dedniel Núñez to Triple-A Syracuse following his MLB debut on Tuesday. The earliest Senga would be able to return now is May 27.

It’s a blow for a rotation and staff that’s already thin and in flux, with pitchers coming and going (Julio Teheran lasted all but a day). Senga hit the IL during spring with a moderate capsule strain in his right shoulder. The Mets have played it safe with him, and it appears they continue to do so.

The Mets are calling up lefty reliever Tyler Jay from Triple-A Syracuse, sources tell Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online. The 29-year-old pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings in one outing at Syracuse after throwing five hitless innings with seven strikeouts and one walk in spring training.

Jay is not on the 40-man roster, and the 40 is full, so the Mets will have to make a move. This is a reminder that the Mets cannot bring up players who are on the 40-man roster (unless injury replacement or a doubleheader) until April 12. Jay hasn’t pitched since Saturday, so the Mets are getting a fresh arm.

Jay, the sixth pick in the first round of the 2015 draft for the Twins, has yet to make his major league debut. New York signed him out of Indy Ball last season, where he was pitching for the Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League. Jay had been out of affiliated ball for three-plus seasons before the Mets signed him.

Jay features a fastball in the low 90s, a slider and a sweeper.

The Mets optioned reliever Dedniel Núñez to Syracuse after he made his major league debut last night against the Braves. Núñez, 27, gave up one earned run on three hits and fanned three in two innings of work. The Mets will still need to announce the aforementioned 40-man roster move.
