rafael montero

The New York Mets have activated RHP Rafael Montero from the Taxi Squad and will option infielder Eric Campbell to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Logan Verrett will still start the 1:10 PM game on Wednesday, while Jacob deGrom continues to recover from his lat muscle issue. Looks like he will avoid the DL.

The New York Mets have called up right-hander Rafael Montero from Triple-A Las Vegas, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Montero, 25, tossed five innings for Las Vegas in their season opener last Thursday, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out five.

The move was expected after the bullpen was taxed for 7 1/3 innings on Monday in relief of Steven Matz who couldn’t make it out of the second inning against the Miami Marlins.

A corresponding roster move has not yet been announced, but it will likely come down to the disabled list or paternity leave for Jacob deGrom who is in Florida with his wife.

The team is reluctant to place deGrom on paternity leave because that would eliminate the opportunity to backdate any future DL stint to deGrom’s last outing if it’s required.

Rubin noted that Sean Gilmartin was due to start for Las Vegas today and hasn’t pitched since logging an inning during the Mets exhibition against the Cubs 11 days ago. Likely the reason why he wasn’t called-up instead.
