Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

In this weekly feature for MMO, I’m going to look back at the previous week’s games and share some interesting data and information that I’ve collected through various websites such as Baseball-ReferenceFanGraphs, and Baseball Savant. It’ll be a mixture of facts, stats, and analytics.

Let’s get into the seven days between July 10 and July 16.

Marlins vs. Mets

Taijuan Walker tossed seven scoreless innings against the Miami Marlins in the Mets’ 2-0 loss at home. Over Walker’s last dozen starts dating back to May 12th, he posted a 2.29 ERA with just two home runs allowed over 74.2 innings pitched. Walker became the first Mets pitcher with a sub-2.30 ERA with two or fewer home runs allowed in a 12-game stretch over a single season since Jacob deGrom in 2014 (min. 70 IP).

Edwin Díaz tossed a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts. It was his seventh-straight appearance with at least two strikeouts, which had only been done eight other times by a Mets reliever in club history. Díaz was the last reliever to do so in 2020 (August 4 to August 19).

Mets vs. Braves

Max Scherzer tossed seven innings of one-run ball with no walks and nine strikeouts in the Mets’ 4-1 win over the Atlanta Braves on the road. It was the 40th time in Scherzer’s career that he allowed no walks while striking out at least nine batters. Only Hall of Fame lefty Randy Johnson has more such starts with 41.

Monday was Max Scherzer’s 10th start with the Mets, and he lowered his ERA to 2.15. That’s the second-lowest ERA by a Mets starting pitcher in his first 10 games with the club. Only Al Leiter posted a lower ERA with a 1.74 mark in 1998.

Edwin Díaz closed out the game in the ninth with an eleven-pitch inning with three strikeouts. It was his third-straight appearance and the eighth consecutive game with at least two strikeouts, which set a new club record by a reliever.

Edwin Díaz’s 19th save of the 2022 season was his 83rd as a Met. That tied Francisco Rodríguez for the eighth-most saves in Mets history.

Mets vs. Braves

David Peterson started for the Mets and tossed 5.1 innings of two-run ball with nine strikeouts in the Mets’ 4-1 loss. Over his last five starts dating back to June 20th, Peterson has struck out 41 batters. He became the first left-handed Mets pitcher to strike out 40 or more batters in a five-game span since Johan Santana in 2010 (August 2 to August 22).

David Peterson recorded 10 swings-and-misses on his slider over his 5.1 innings pitched. It’s the third time in his major league career that he’s recorded double-digit whiffs on his slider, and first since April 7, 2021, against the Philadelphia Phillies. His career high is 14 (September 19, 2020).

Mets vs. Braves

The Mets took the rubber game of the series with a 7-3 win behind six innings of one-run ball by Chris Bassitt. The right-hander recorded 17 swings-and-misses in his start, the most he’s had as a Met.

The Mets hit three home runs in their win (Francisco Lindor, Eduardo Escobar, and Mark Canha). It was the first time that the Mets had hit at least three home runs against the Braves on the road since July 31, 2020.

Eduardo Escobar’s solo home run in the second inning traveled 426 feet to right field. That was the longest homer Escobar has hit as a member of the Mets.

Mets vs. Cubs

Carlos Carrasco tossed six scoreless innings to pick up his 10th win of the season in the Mets’ 8-0 shutout against the Chicago Cubs on the road. Carrasco became the first Met since R.A. Dickey in 2012 to record double-digit wins prior to the All-Star break.

Pete Alonso drove in two runs to give him 74 RBI this season. He tied David Wright (2006) for the most first-half RBI in club history.

Trevor Williams tossed three scoreless innings in relief to record his first career save. He became the first Met to record a save of at least three scoreless innings without issuing a walk since Logan Verrett on July 5, 2015.

Mets vs. Cubs: Game One

Pete Alonso drove in his 75th run of the season with an RBI double in the fourth, setting a new Mets record for most first-half RBI.

Adam Ottavino tossed two scoreless and hitless innings in relief. It was the first time that Ottavino had recorded at least six outs and did not allow a run or hit since April 30, 2017.

Mets vs. Cubs: Game Two

Max Scherzer struck out 11 over 6.1 innings pitched in the Mets’ 4-3 win in 10 innings. It was Scherzer’s 108th career double-digit strikeout game, tying him with Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez for the fourth-most games in major league history.

Over his first 11 starts with the Mets, Max Scherzer has struck out 90 batters in 69 innings pitched. Only Pedro Martínez struck out more batters in his first 11 games with the club (92 in 2005).

In Max Scherzer’s first eight starts as a Met, he posted a 30.7 percent whiff rate. Over his last three starts since coming off the IL, Scherzer’s whiff rate has jumped to 38.8 percent.

In 15 career appearances, Colin Holderman has inherited eight baserunners and not allowed a single one to score.
