After the Mets’ win and dazzling start from Jacob deGrom on Friday they looked to carry that momentum into game two of their three game series against the Washington Nationals. A handful of Mets pitchers and hitters did not get the job done as they lost by a final score of 7-1.

On The Mound

Marcus Stroman and his sub-one ERA took the mound today for the Mets. Early on he was not getting the calls from home plate umpire Edwin Moscoso, and a poor play from Michael Conforto in the first gave the Nationals the lead after two batters. After that, Stroman had trouble locating his pitches and the Nationals ate him up on a bunch of singles that brought in four more runs. He departed the game after just four innings for Stephen Tarpley.

Tarpley, who was making his season and Mets debut, came on in the fifth and gave up two walks and a single to load the bases. He then hit Nationals catcher Alex Avila and another run came in to score. Tarpley did not record an out and was replaced by Robert Gsellman. He didn’t have much command on his pitches either.

Gsellman had a promising outing as he went three innings allowing no hits and giving up a walk. If Gsellman can be effective for the Mets this season it could be huge  for them. Jacob Barnes also pitched well in his one inning of work, giving up a hit but no runs. Jeurys Familia finished it off for the pitching side of things in the ninth with a one-two-three inning where he struck out two.

At the Plate

Joe Ross pitched extremely well for the Nationals on Saturday. He went six innings and gave up one run on five hits and struck out four. The one run came courtesy of Conforto’s first home run of the year which doinked off the right field foul pole. The Mets are hoping that one swing of the bat will be able to get him out of his slump. Other than the home run the Mets bats were very quiet.

They stayed quiet even after Ross came out. They threatened a couple of times throughout the game as they had six hits, but as it has gone all season for the Mets, they couldn’t make anything of it and were hit with a final score of 7-1.

On Deck

The Mets will look to take the rubber match of this series on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. Taijuan Walker will face off against Patrick Corbin.
