New York Mets minor-league left-hander, Anthony Kay, pitched a scoreless frame in the 2019 SiriusXM MLB All-Star Futures Game at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday night.

Taking the ball in the bottom of the fourth, the 24-year-old Long Island allowed a leadoff single to Tampa Bay prospect, Wander Franco. Not a great start, but Kay would rebound impressively.

The Ward Melville High grad got White Sox prospect Nick Madrigal to ground into a double play to erase Franco, then struck out Luis Robert, another ChiSox farmhand, on a terrific four-seam-curve-two-seam combination.

Jacob Resnick of MMO captured the sequence (footage via MLB Network).

Kay pitched to a glowing 1.49 ERA over his first 12 starts of the 2019 season (66.1 innings), all with Double-A Binghamton. Since making the jump to Triple-A Syracuse on June 14, the southpaw’s pitched to a 9.64 ERA over four International League starts (14 innings).

With a few openings presumably about to open up in the Mets major-league rotation, Kay could very well be a candidate to fill a potential void left by the hypothetical but wholly expected upcoming trade of Zack Wheeler.

We’ll keep you posted when new information becomes available.
