The Mets announced that Yoenis Cespedes will not play again this season due to his right hamstring strain.

He has said he will completely change his workout regimen this offseason, which will hopefully lead to less time on the disabled list next season.

New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes left Friday night’s game against the Washington Nationals in the first inning with what was later revealed to be a right hamstring strain.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said the location is similar to the injury the outfielder sustained earlier this season that forced him to miss six weeks.

”I wouldn’t necessarily expect it be as long, but we don’t have that much time left in the season,” Alderson said. ”Very disappointing.”

Cespedes had walked to get on base and was limping as he rounded third. He was taken out immediately as Matt Reynolds came in as the pinch runner.

”Of course I’m going to work hard and try to come back as soon as I can, but I’m not going to push myself to come back if I’m not 100 percent,” Cespedes said through a translator.

The Mets started the game with only three bench players on Friday after putting outfielder Michael Conforto on the disabled list earlier in the day.

New York is now down to two healthy outfielders in Brandon Nimmo and Juan Lagares.

”It’s been very frustrating because I know how much work I put into this offseason to come in ready this season, probably more than ever before,” Cespedes said. ”I’ve just had injury after injury. This one, in particular, is so frustrating because I think right before this I felt the best I’ve felt all season long. It’s definitely frustrating.”

Las Vegas 51s outfielder Travis Taijeron was scratched from the original lineup according to Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas-Review Journal and may be en route to New York.

Taijeron, 28, has tied a career high this year with 25 home runs but has struck out 146 times in 125 games. He will have to be added to the 40-man roster if promoted to the majors.
