According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mets and Phillies are among 11 teams that are interested in free agent closer Brian Fuentes.

Rotoworld adds that the veteran left-hander is seeking a contract similar to Scott Downs’, with ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reporting last week that he was looking for a three-year deal worth around $15 million.

The fact that the Mets are mentioned seems more grounded in fantasy than in reality.

Fuentes, 35, is not worth $5 million per season and giving him three years would be sheer lunacy.

Considering the Mets didn’t find Pedro Feliciano and his demands very appetizing, I would imagine that what Fuentes wants would make them very queasy.

I’m not sure I’d even entertain the idea of Fuentes even if he lowered his demands to $4 million annually.
