The Mets (3-3) dropped game two of a three-game contest against the Milwaukee Brewers (4-1) with a 9-0 shutout loss on Tuesday evening at American Family Field. After taking three of four in Miami to kick off the year, New York has struggled on their season-opening road trip and has now gone 19 straight innings without scoring a run. This is the first back-to-back shutout loss since the team dropped two straight in June 2021 against the Braves.

(Box Score)

Max Scherzer got the start for New York on Tuesday evening, and had a rough start—and finish—to his outing. The right-hander tossed five and 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Scherzer gave up two runs in the first inning after allowing a pair of singles and a double from Brian Anderson to Milwaukee. The starter managed to stay out of further trouble until the sixth inning when things went south. After getting the first out of the frame, Scherzer allowed three straight home runs to Rowdy Tellez, Brian Anderson, and Garrett Mitchell. He then delivered a base on balls to end his evening. This is the second time Scherzer has allowed three straight home runs in an outing—the last coming in Arizona in July 2017 with the Nationals.

Denyi Reyes, who was called up earlier in the afternoon to take Tommy Hunter‘s spot after the roster following his move to the 15-day injured list, closed out the remaining two outs of the sixth in relief of Scherzer.

Brooks Raley took the mound for New York in the seventh with a 5-0 deficit and allowed a pair of singles to set up a three-run homer for Anderson—his second of the night. Mitchell followed—again back-to-back—with his second bomb of the evening to make it 9-0. In a tough outing for the Mets’ pitching staff, they allowed five homers in the space of 12 batters over two innings.

Adam Ottavino entered in relief for the Mets in the eighth and tossed a scoreless inning, closing out the Brewers’ onslaught.

Through this shaky evening the offense managed to provide the club’s pitching staff with no run support. New York knocked eight hits (three each from Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil), left seven on base and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Player of the Game: Jeff McNeil

Jeff McNeil takes home the player of the game honors on a bleak offensive night for New York. The second baseman went 3-for-3 at the dish with a walk to reach safely in all four plate appearances, accounting for almost half of the club’s eight hits.

On Deck

The Mets look to rebound from back-to-back shutout losses to the Brewers on Wednesday evening.

David Peterson (0-1, 1.80 ERA) will face off against Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes (0-1, 7.20 ERA).

In Peterson’s last outing against the Marlins, the lefty tossed five innings, allowing one run—a homer—on eight hits and struck out five, with one walk. Burnes last start was against the Cubs, where he pitched five frames and allowed four runs, four hits, and walked three with three strikeouts.

The game will be on SNY and WCBS 880.
