Carlos Carrasco made his 2023 season debut on Monday, as the Mets began their three-game set against the Brewers in Milwaukee. The veteran right-hander took the mound, looking to get on the right track after the Mets’ won their first series of the year against the Marlins.

Carrasco looked sharp early against the Brewers, striking out two batters in two hitless innings. Carrasco’s changeup especially looked good, which he used to strike out Christian Yelich and Brian Anderson.

After being held hitless in the first two innings, the Brewers manufactured a run against Carrasco in the bottom of the third. Brice Turang — the Brewers’ rookie shortstop — walked to start the inning, then stole second base with nobody out. After retiring Joey Wiemer and striking out Yelich for a second time, Carrasco allowed a bloop single to Jesse Winker to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

Carrasco continued to struggle in the bottom of the fourth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Garrett Mitchell extended the inning with a single to right field. The single proved to be critical, as Anderson cranked a two-run home run to center field to increase the Brewers’ lead to 3-0.

After scoring in two consecutive innings, the Brewers broke the Mets’ back in the bottom of the fifth. Carrasco walked Yelich and Winker to begin the inning, prompting Buck Showalter to go to his bullpen. Tommy Hunter entered the game with nobody out and immediately got roughed up. Willy Adames — the first batter Hunter faced — singled up the middle to drive in Winker, increasing the Brewers’ lead to 4-0. Then, after walking Rowdy TellezWilliam Contreras grounded out to second base to bring the Brewers’ lead to 5-0.

Those two runs were charged to Carrasco, who struggled in his 2023 debut. He struck out four, walked four, and allowed five earned runs in four innings. After an ugly first start, Carrasco’s ERA is 11.25.

With one out now, Hunter looked to escape the nightmare bottom of the fifth inning. The Brewers had other plans, and weren’t close to being done. Hunter walked Mitchell to reload the bases, bringing up Anderson, who had hit a home run earlier. The former Marlin singled to right field to increase the Brewers’ lead to 6-0. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, Turang stepped up to the plate. The Brewers’ rookie launched a grand slam over the head of Starling Marte to bring the Brewers’ lead to 10-0 and cap off a seven-run inning.

Freddy Peralta responded nicely after the Brewers’ dominant bottom half of the fifth. The Brewers’ third starter struck out Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso in the top of the sixth inning, which encapsulated and ended his day. In total, Peralta struck out seven, walked three, and allowed only two hits in six scoreless innings.

The bullpens took over from there for both sides. After Hunter pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth, Dennis Santana and Luis Guillorme — yes, you read that correctly — pitched scoreless innings. Bryse Wilson entered the game in the top seventh for the Brewers, pitching the final three innings of the game, while holding the Mets off the board.

With the loss on Monday, the Mets’ record fell to 3-2. It was the first time in 2023 that the Mets were shut-out. The Mets were only shut-out eight times in 2022.

Player of the Game: Luis Guillorme

Guillorme was the one bright spot on a forgettable day for the Mets. The utility infielder had two of the Mets’ three hits on the day, while also pitching a scoreless inning in the bottom of the eighth. Guillorme was the only pitcher on Monday who did not walk a batter.
