Eric Campbell has been demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas so that the Mets could open up a roster spot for newly acquired James Loney.

To make room on the 40 man roster, the Mets designated RHP Jeff Walters for assignment.

Loney, 32, was batting .342 with a .373 OBP and .424 slugging in 43 games with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate. He had nine doubles, two homers and 28 RBIs in 158 at-bats.

A career .285 major league hitter, Loney doesn’t have that prototypical first baseman’s power, but he owns a career .303 average with runners in scoring position.

Loney is in the lineup tonight, playing first base and batting sixth.

He figures to be in a platoon at first with Wilmer Flores, with Loney getting the bulk of the playing time against right-handed pitching. Although, Loney will play everyday as long as David Wright is out of the lineup.
