Per club announcement, the Mets have activated recently acquired pitcher Wilmer Font, and will option fellow starter Corey Oswalt to Triple-A Syracuse in order to make room.

Oswalt had been recalled yesterday after the organization chose to option reliever Tim Peterson, and will now trek back to the minors for the third time in over a month. All told, he hasn’t appeared in a big-league contest since a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on April 26.

Font, 29, was brought in on a cash deal with the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday afternoon after being designated for assignment. The right-hander has five career starts to his name since he first returned to the big-leagues in 2017, and had worked 14 innings over 10 games with the Rays this year. Despite a 5.79 ERA, Font owns a 3.50 FIP, averaging 11.6 K/9 against 3.2 BB/9.

Though nothing has been officially determined, the expectation seems to be that the Mets will start Font for tomorrow’s day game in San Diego, filling in for an injured (though not yet on the injured list) Steven Matz. He will wear uniform number 68.

Other options on the 40-man roster include Drew Gagnon and Chris Flexen, the latter of whom was optioned on Sunday after working an inning and a third in the Mets’ 18-inning loss to the Brewers on Saturday. It remains unclear how the Mets intend to replace Jason Vargas, who was recently placed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring injury.
