With the season coming to an end Sunday, the Mets draft position for the 2022 draft was locked in place along with it.
The Mets will have two first-round draft picks in the 2022 draft–one is their original and the other is the pick they get for Kumar Rocker, their 2021 first-round pick, not coming to terms with the team.
Those two picks will land at No. 11 (the Rocker compensatory pick) and No. 14.
They also might have picks in the compensatory first round should any player who rejects the qualifying offer signs elsewhere. The Mets are likely to extended a qualifying offer to Michael Conforto and Noah Syndergaard, who are the only worthy upcoming free agents who are eligible for the compensation. Noah Syndergaard said he was “hoping for” a qualifying offer. Conforto hasn’t commented on the matter of the qualifying offer outside of saying it was “too early” to say if he’d accept it or reject it in mid-September. He’d likely reject the one-year offer, expected to come in at around $20 million.
On the flip side, should the Mets sign any player who rejected the qualifying offer, the team would have to forfeit its No. 14 pick. Rules state that you give up your second pick in the draft if you sign a free agent who rejected a qualifying offer, so the forfeited pick would then become the 14th pick.
Details about where and when 2022 MLB draft will take place haven’t been announced yet. It wouldn’t be surprising to see more details come out once the new collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the players’ association is agreed to, as the draft itself–how many rounds, rules, etc.–are bargaining points for both sides.
The Baltimore Orioles will select first in the 2022 draft. They’ve picked in the top five each of the last four years, picking first in 2018.
