Mike Puma of the New York Post spoke to a Mets person who told him that Mike Pelfrey will be non-tendered next month, but that Andres Torres could be back and that a decision on him is still “up in the air”.
Pelfrey underwent Tommy John surgery in May and is unlikely to be ready until May or June depending on how rehab goes. Pelfrey avoided arbitration with the Mets last Winter and earned $5.7 million. He pitched just 19.2 innings with a 2.29 ERA and 13 strikeouts before he went down. The big righthander is likely to get a one-year contract worth around $2 million plus incentives according to Adam Rubin.
As for Torres, the fact he’s being considered shows how dire the Mets outfield options really are. Torres batted .230 with a .327 on-base and 13 steals in 374 at-bats last season while earning $2.7 million dollars. He was acquired in the deal that sent Angel Pagan to the San Francisco Giants for Ramon Ramirez last December. Torres was particularly brutal against RHP batting just .195 against them with 58 strikeouts in 226 at-bats.
Earlier today, Rubin also said Terry Collins is prepared to make Kirk Nieuwenhuis the starting center fielder next season, while Alderson has said Jason Bay will be back and that Lucas Duda is a valuable part of his plans for the 2013 season.
