Per a release by the Mets, catcher Devin Mesoraco is “assessing his options” after finding out that he will not be making the Mets’ Opening Day roster.

Earlier this morning, the Mets tweeted outRajai Davis, Carlos Gomez, Ryan O’Rourke, Hector Santiago and Adeiny Hechavarría have been re-assigned to minor league camp. Devin Mesoraco has been told he didn’t make the 25-man roster. Mesoraco is assessing his options.”

Mesoraco signed a minor-league deal earlier this winter and exercised the upward mobility clause in contract on March 20, which would have allowed him to depart the Mets for another team if they placed him on their 25-man roster. However, no team chose to claim him.

Mesoraco, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post, was pushing for the Mets to release him so he can pursue other opportunities around baseball.

To add on to the newly found circus, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that “[I]f the Mets do not grant Mesoraco his release, he is prepared to retire. His hope is that the Mets grant him the release, giving him a chance to hook on with another organization.”

Mesoraco, 30, is currently positioned to be the fourth catcher on the Mets’ depth chart entering the new season, behind starter Wilson Ramos, and backup options Tomas Nido and Travis d’Arnaud.

It is also still entirely possible that d’Arnaud starts the season on the Injured List and stays in extended Spring Training to continue rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery last spring. Nido is currently in position to be the backup catcher for the Mets come Opening Day.
