After hitting two more home runs last night in a 4-for-5 outburst for Triple-A Las Vegas, Wilmer Flores now has 12 homers and 74 RBIs halfway through the season. His batting line of .325/.361/.537 along with his 33 doubles and 51 runs scored, puts him among the PCL leaders in all of those offensive categories.
He has nothing left to prove.
Today, Flores took home the No. 6 spot on Baseball America’s latest Prospect Hot Sheet. They had this to say:
Talk about linear progression—Flores’ OPS has climbed from .715 in April to .873 in May to .950 in June to 1.200 through 11 games this month.
He placed an exclamation point on his recent performance with a 4-for-5, two-homer, one-double game yesterday versus Tucson.
Flores has very quietly climbed to the top of the PCL heap in three categories—doubles (33), extra-base hits (49) and RBIs (74) – and while he’s had considerably more success in Las Vegas, he still has a .288/.333/.440 batting line in road games. Not bad for a 21-year-old second baseman in Triple-A.

Flores has to come up and come up soon. You can’t leave a guy doing that down on the farm much longer. I like Murph, but sometimes you gotta make room for next. I went into this season actually expecting Flores to shine, but also thinking he was going to be trade bait. At this point, I want to see him in a Mets uniform. And it should be sooner rather than later. Over on the other blog whose name shall not be uttered, I noted that this seemed similar to what happened with Wright. Ty Wigginton was actually playing well. He was well liked. He was an improving player on a bad team. But the guy down below was just too good to keep down there. Feels similar here. Love Murph. But Flores has to play.

Prospect watchers may want to take note of the Mets in September if the organization ends up promoting a trio of young position players on its 40-man roster—Flores, catcher Travis d’Arnaud (If he can somehow stay healthy) and Double-A right fielder Cesar Puello—to make their major league debuts in tandem. Hopefully, we get to see this kid and see what we got in 2014 which is the year many predicted the Mets to be contenders and/or Playoffs bound.

Flores is the reason why I think it best for the Mets to trade Murphy at the deadline and give the spot to Flores. I believe Alderson has it in his mind that Flores is the future 2B (if he hits, we will find a place for him to play).
