The Nationals and free agent starting pitcher Max Scherzer have agreed to a seven-year deal, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports. Ken Rosenthal says the deal is worth $180 million dollars.

According to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, the Nationals may explore trading either Jordan Zimmermann or Stephen Strasburg.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting that free agent pitcher Max Scherzer is in talks with the Nationals and at least one other club about a potential seven-year deal.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is saying that a deal is close, and there is a growing confidence among Nationals officials that they will sign Scherzer.

Scherzer to the Nats would clearly be bad news for the Mets and the rest of the NL East. Scherzer is easily one of top five pitchers in the game, and he will no doubt strengthen an already formidable rotation for the Nats. Last season, the Nationals’ pitching staff led the MLB with a 3.03 ERA.

Scherzer, 30, was the American League Cy Young award winner in 2013 for the Tigers. He posted an excellent 21-3 record with a  2.90 ERA that season.  Scherzer was phenomenal again last year with Detroit, winning 18 games with a 3.13 ERA and striking out 252 batters in 220 innings.
