The New York Mets announced today that Steven Matz will pitch a simulated game on Saturday and could return to the team next Thursday to pitch in a doubleheader against the Phillies.

The lefty had a disastrous start on July 31 against the Nationals, and he has been sidelined with forearm tightness since then. Matz for the season has a 4.35 ERA in 107 innings and was able to stay healthy before the All Star break which is a new one.

Mickey Callaway also told reporters that the team could go to a six-man rotation when Matz returns to allow them to keep Corey Oswalt in the big leagues as a starter. That would also mean that the struggling Jason Vargas would stay in the rotation as well.
