Steven Matz
got his third win against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 28 after another great outing. Matz pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings before giving up a two-run homer to third baseman, Mike Moustakas with two outs and a man on in the seventh inning. After giving up the two runs, Matz got the last out of the inning stopping them there.

Matz pitched seven innings giving up only two runs on a home run to Moustakas. The lefty recorded four strikeouts and gave up only five hits, including the home run. In his first five starts this season, he had an ERA of 4.03 in 29.1 innings pitched. After his brutal start in Philly on April 16 that saw him unable to escape the first inning, he has pitched a scoreless first inning in each of his last two starts.

Matz has the best ERA (3.68 ERA) out of the Mets rotation for 2019 after today’s start as Jacob deGrom has a 4.82 ERA, Noah Syndergaard has a 6.35 ERA, Zack Wheeler has a 4.93 ERA, and Jason Vargas has a 7.20 ERA. Along with the best ERA, Matz has the best record amongst his fellow pitchers with a 3-1 record and two no-decisions, both of which led to wins.

Mats spoke about his outing today in his post-game interview, as well as how he’s felt all season thus far.

“I feel really comfortable. I have a lot of confidence out there and it has been good working with Wilson. We seem to have a good rhythm together and called a great game. It has been good.”

Steven has a 2.59 ERA in his last 13 home starts since June 3, 2018, with 10 quality starts in that span. This season, he has a 1.50 ERA at home with two wins. Steven’s great outing today helped the Mets break a three-game losing streak while also avoiding a series sweep from the Brewers. Matz has allowed six hits or fewer in 15-straight starts since August 16, 2018.

If we don’t include Steven’s start in Philadelphia, he would have a 1.84 ERA and have two wins and no losses. It seems safe to say that Steven Matz has a lot more confidence in himself and his pitches this year and will be more consistent if he continues to be.
