Steven Matz finished his spring strong after getting off to a rough start.
On Sunday, in his final Grapefruit League appearance, Matz kept the Miami Marlins at bay allowing just two hits over four shutout innings.
“I know the phrase is ‘it’s just spring training,’ but that is really the way it is,” Matz said. “You’ve just got to get out there and get reps and feel comfortable and now at this point we’ve got to step on the gas and go, so I feel that’s where I am at.”
The southpaw started the afternoon off strong, setting down the Fish in order while registering two strikeouts.
The second inning saw much of the same, as he recorded his third strikeout of the afternoon after inducing a pop out and following with a fly out.
It wasn’t until the fourth inning where Matz got into a bit of trouble. However, he was helped by a tremendous throw from Yoenis Cespedes to gun down a runner trying to score.
Overall, Matz worked around a pair of hits and a base on balls to end the afternoon with a clean outing.
“They brought their best lineup out there, I was able to navigate it a couple times through,” Matz said. “I think I went three times through, so that’s how important spring is, going into the season.”
The 26-year-old finished the spring by allowing four earned runs over his last 18.1 innings in Grapefruit League play, striking out 20. Nine of those came in his previous outing against the reigning World Series champion Houston Astros.
Matz is coming off surgery to reposition the ulnar nerve in his throwing elbow, a similar procedure to the one Jacob deGrom underwent in the 2016 season.
Finally healthy, Matz feels he is able to throw with some conviction and finish his pitches.
“It’s really nice. I’ve been able to really work on stuff between starts,” Matz said. “Especially this time with an extra day of rest. I got a nice long bullpen session and I can really get the work in. That’s what it’s all about. When you go out there and you don’t have anything nagging you, you just worry about getting guys out. It’s been really good.”
Matz’s first start of the regular season will come Sunday at Citi Field against the St. Louis Cardinals.
