New York Mets left-hander Steven Matz entered his third spring start on Friday with a 54.00 in only 1.2 innings but he lowered that all the way down to 15.88 with four scoreless innings against the Detroit Tigers regulars.
Matz threw four scoreless innings on three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. He also picked off a runner and needed only 53 pitches in the outing.
He was reportedly pumping mostly fastballs that were sitting 93/94 MPH and had much better command of his stuff. The much needed bounce back from Matz helps his case for the Mets fifth starter.
After the game Matz credited Mets pitching coach Dave Eiland with helping him make a small mechanical change, “Dave came in here and made it very clear what he wants to do and how we’re going to go about our business. He took the lead there and got me right.”
Matz is battling Zack Wheeler, Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman for the fifth starters spot in the rotation.
According to GM Sandy Alderson, Matz will not see the major league bullpen and will either be in the major league or Triple-A rotation.
