Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported Monday morning that Mets’ left-hander Steven Matz is indeed dealing with a nerve issue in his arm.

Matz, 27, headed back to New York on Sunday to receive tests, which revealed the nerve issue. New York has dodged a bullet, however, as there is no issue with his elbow.

The nerve issue has been plaguing Matz for a couple weeks now, said manager Mickey Callaway, but the problem came to a head this weekend.

Matz will be forced to miss a start or possibly two with the issue.

New York acquired right-hander Wilmer Font from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, so if Matz is forced to hit the injured list, Font may take his spot on the active roster.

According to multiple sources, Mets’ left-handed Steven Matz is headed back to New York to have a nerve in his forearm examined.

Matz, 27, has perhaps enjoyed the most success of any Mets starter this season. In seven games started, the Long Island native is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA.

This comes on the heels of fellow starter Jason Vargas exiting Sunday’s game with injury.
