The New York Mets, who have been hit incredibly hard with injuries this season, might be starting to see a light at the end of this very painful tunnel.

After having to stall his rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse earlier this month, Andy Martino of SNY is reporting that third baseman J.D. Davis will get back on the field on Tuesday as he continues working his way back to the big-league club. Davis has been on the injured list since the beginning of May with a left-hand sprain, and it was lingering issues with his injury that temporarily forced him back to the sideline.

Although multiple trips to the IL have limited Davis to just 48 plate appearances this season, he’s been excellent with the bat in his hands, slashing .390/.479/.610 with two home runs and seven RBI, which is good for a 203 wRC+. It’s also a big reason why his overall performance has been worth 0.7 fWAR so far in 2021 (he posted just 0.5 fWAR in 229 plate appearances last year).

This is more welcome news for a club that’s already anticipating other players to come back this week. First baseman Pete Alonso is expected to get activated before Monday night’s series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with reliever Seth Lugo and outfielder Kevin Pillar not far behind him. If all goes well for Davis in Syracuse, he may be catching a flight out west himself to rejoin the Mets.
