jose fernandez

According to Sirius XM radio host Craig Mish of Miami’s The Ticket, there is rowing sentiment around Baseball and internally with the Marlins that right-hander Jose Fernandez will be traded this offseason.

This could be a reaction to Marlins president David Samson telling the Miami Herald last week that Jose Fernandez had rejected a multi-year contract offer.

According to Andy Slater who spoke to Mish this afternoon:

“I’ve been told through multiple sources that Fernandez is unhappy with the Marlins. “Jose is a different person on and off camera,” one source said based on anonymity.

“Mish told me by phone his sources say the Marlins are looking for a “franchise altering” deal” and will get one this offseason.”

Like Matt Harvey, Fernandez doesn’t become a free agent until 2018 and shares the same agent Scott Boras – who by the way was banned by the Marlins from having input on how team handles his innings limits.

Fernandez, 23, made 11 starts in his first season back from Tommy John surgery and looked better than ever, posting a 2.92 ERA and 1.161 WHIP in 64.2 innings with 72 strikeouts. He owns a stellar 2.40 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 336/85 K/BB ratio in his first 289 major league innings.

This will bear monitoring if only to see what kind of a haul the Marlins will get if they trade him at all.
