A week before the trade deadline, the first domino has fallen. The Mariners have acquired first baseman Josh Naylor from the Diamondbacks in exchange for pitching prospects Brandyn Garcia and Ashton Izzi. Baseball America ranked Garcia as the No. 19 prospect in Seattle’s organization, and Izzi as their No. 13 prospect.

Coming off his first career All-Star Game selection in 2o24, Naylor is enjoying a solid season in the desert, batting .292/.360/.447 (123 wRC+) with 11 homers, 19 doubles, 11 steals, and 59 RBIs over 394 plate appearances. He has a career-high 9.4% walk rate and a 12.4% strikeout rate, which is the lowest he’s had over a full season. Naylor is set to hit free agency after the season. He joins a Seattle lineup that ranks 10th in the majors in runs scored, though their first basemen have an underwhelming .233/.298/.412 cumulative batting line. The Mariners currently occupy the second American League Wild Card spot and are two games behind the Yankees for the top spot.

As for Arizona’s return, Garcia was an 11th-round pick out of Texas A&M University in 2023. He cracked the majors in 2025, but has spent most of the season in Double-A and Triple-A. He’s spent the entire season as a reliever, posting a 3.51 ERA with 42 strikeouts against 17 walks in 33 1/3 innings in the minor leagues. The right-handed Izzi was a fourth-round pick in 2022 and has spent 2025 with High-A Everett. He’s made 12 starts this season, pitching to a 5.51 ERA with 54 strikeouts against 21 walks in 47 1/3 innings.
