Mets’ manager Luis Rojas addressed the media today via Zoom and supplied information about the recent injuries to pitcher Carlos Carrasco and first baseman/outfielder Dominic Smith.

Carrasco, 34 on Sunday, tweaked his hamstring during conditioning that followed a live bullpen session on Thursday, and underwent a subsequent MRI.

There were conflicting reports on the severity of the injury, and the timeline to which he would be available again, but Rojas said Friday that it is being classified as a “Grade 1 hamstring strain.”

Grade 1 hamstring strains, if that is in fact what is ailing Carrasco, are more mild than other hamstring injuries, but will likely still require a several week recovery process. Carrasco had already had setbacks this spring, as he arrived late to camp as he recovered from his COVID-19 vaccination and dealt with moderate elbow discomfort.

Smith, 25, was scratched from Thursday’s contest as he arrived to the field with wrist soreness. However, Rojas said the plan was for Smith to get some swings in prior to today’s game with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets’ skipper added that there is a simulated game tomorrow and Smith might participate, but they will play it by ear based off how matters go today and how he feels tomorrow.
