New York Mets starter, Logan Verrett found himself in an unenviable position in last night’s 4-2 loss to the Washington Nationals. He was staked with the daunting task of going toe-to-toe with Nationals all-star starter, Max Scherzer due to the pushing back of Steven Matz in the rotation as he deals with elbow discomfort.

Verrett, to his credit, did his job pitching five solid innings while allowing just two runs on four hits. He did walk four batters and struck out just one but ultimately kept the game within reach for the team’s anemic offense.

“I kept us in the game, gave us a chance to come back and win it,” Verrett said. (Newsday)

Despite the solid start against the first-place Nationals, Verrett took the loss. His record dropped to 3-5 on the season as his ERA dropped a bit to 4.08 while his WHIP rose to 1.47.

Verrett has done a commendable job for the most part filling in for the Mets rotation when needed this season. Matz will start in tonight’s opening game of a four-game set against the Chicago Cubs.
