Turns out it was neither rat nor raccoon.

Six months later we have clarity on the Mets rat-raccoon altercation on May 7. The New York Post reports that Francisco Lindor grabbed Jeff McNeil by the throat and pinned him against a wall in the tunnel after frustrations boiled over from McNeil’s field positioning.

According to the Post, the frustration had been building up over the course of several weeks.

“[Lindor] would always try to get him to move and Jeff would be like, ‘Shut up, I got it,’ ” a club source told the Post. “It was building and building.”

On May 7, McNeil lined up to the left of second base during a shift. He ranged too far to the hole in pursuing a ground ball. Lindor then fielded the ball himself but the runner, Nick Ahmed, was safe at first after a hesitation on the throw from Lindor because of McNeil ducking.

Postgame players shied away from the truth stating it was a disagreement over whether it was a rat or raccoon they spotted in the tunnel. On the SNY video feed from that night, you can see multiple players rush into the tunnel in an attempt to break things up.

McNeil was reportedly benched once earlier this season by manager Luis Rojas for refusing to get on board with the team’s shifting, the Post learned. It is unclear whether it was the April 22 game in Chicago or the April 25 game at home against the Nationals.

Due to injuries and player acquisitions, McNeil and Lindor split duties up the middle just 18 more times the rest of the season.

Both players’ agents declined to comment on the situation. Rojas nor acting general manager Zack Scott spoke the day after not backing up the rat or raccoon story the players went with. Scott said he would not have handled it that way and “it’s a little bit of a bigger story than it needs to be.”

The players appeared to reconcile after the alleged altercation, according to the Post.
