On Sunday, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe had a few things to say as it pertains to the New York Mets.

He hears that if David Wright doesn’t come back this season, or is not the Wright of old when he does, the Mets will be thinking along the lines of possibly acquiring two bats, with one of them at shortstop.

While the Mets are hoping that Michael Cuddyer starts hitting, there’s a feeling in the organization that they will pull the trigger on at least one bat, and that Jon Niese will be the vehicle to add a hitter.

-josh-reddickIf this is true, then names like Justin Upton, Carlos Gomez, Josh Reddick, Ben Zobrist, Yasiel Puig or any player of that caliber are not coming to Flushing.

With Niese as the headliner, we’re talking something along the lines of an Alex Guerrero,  Marlon Byrd or Aramis Ramirez.

Mike Puma of the New York Post, however, hears that the Mets are not anxious to move Niese because they are relying on his innings going forward.

That may be true, but it could also be some posturing from the Mets.

Puma also tweeted out that the Mets view prospects such as center fielder Brandon Nimmo, shortstop Gavin Cecchini, and right-hander Michael Fulmer as trade chips in a possible deal.

matt reynoldsMarc Carig of Newsday also touches on that and hears that the Mets feel they have enough talent in the system to get help at the deadline.

In addition to the players Puma mentioned he includes Jhoan Urena, Matt Reynolds and Robert Gsellman, while saying Michael Conforto and Amed Rosario are off limits.

Puma lists Justin Upton, Carlos Gomez and Gerardo Parra as players that remain on the Mets’ radar.

Another player the Mets have been linked to is Brewers shortstop Jean Segura, who could be traded to make room for Double A prospect Orlando Arcia, according to Cafardo. “You wonder if the 25-year-old could be a fit with the Mets,” he writes.

Fulmer, 22,  is having a tremendous campaign for Double-A Binghamton where he’s in the top five in the league in various categories. He now boasts a 2.16 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 65 strikeouts in 75 innings pitched.

Nimmo, 22, has his average up to .285 with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 265 plate appearances. Cecchini, 21, is slashing at .305/.368/.440 with seven homers and 41 RBIs in 353 plate appearances. All three are former first round selections during Sandy Alderson’s tenure.

While very few deals have been made so far, the buzz is becoming furiously rampant and some expect a huge volume of trades to go down in the final two days leading into the deadline as teams wait for the last possible moment to get something done.
