Anthony Dicomo of MLB.com reports that Juan Lagares sprained his big toe on his left foot by running into the wall to make a catch in the ninth inning during today’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
However, the Mets did get X-rays and they came up negative, so he is just day-to-day at the moment.
The outfielder is off to a great start this season with a .339 average, even after going 0-3 with two strikeouts in today’s contest. Defensively, Lagares already has four defensive runs saved in only 30 games played.
The Mets just placed Yoenis Cespedes on the 10-day DL this morning, so the Mets cannot really afford to get another injury in their outfield. As it is, the team called up Phillip Evans to replace him, who is not a natural outfielder, despite now being labeled as the team’s fifth.
