There’s a great pic from our new photo services provider of Mets center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis picking up his first major league hit against Atlanta’s Jair Jurrjens. The single was one of two hits for Captain Kirk who was making his major league debut.
“It feels great,” Nieuwenhuis said. “I try to keep it on an even keel as much as possible, but it’s been a little bit of a roller coaster for sure.”
Nieuwenhuis is filling in for the injured Andres Torres who is expected to be out for a minimum of two weeks. Manager Terry Collins said there will be plenty of at-bats for Nieuwenhuis while he was here, but I would expect him to sit out tomorrows game against left-hander Mark Minor.
Something worth noting is that Nieuwenhuis was one of seven homegrown players the Mets started against the Braves today, with only Jason Bay and R.A. Dickey being the only exceptions – both came to the Mets via free agency.
