The good folks at Elias Sports Bureau say that Justin Turner can match Ron Swoboda’s 1965 franchise rookie record if he can drive in a run Friday at Yankee Stadium.
Turner has produced an RBI in five straight games, one shy of Swoboda’s mark. He has 10 RBIs over the five-game span.
With the start of the Subway Series only a day away, the Mets need all the offense they can muster especially with David Wright and Ike Davis on the shelf. The bullpen has been excellent this month, and lately even the starting pitching has been rising to the occasion, but with some of their big guns missing, the Mets really needed for some of the other position players to step up in a big way if they are going to stay afloat until they are healthy again.
Justin Turner has done just that. His sizzling hot bat has put a big charge into the Mets lineup and the best part of it is that his timing couldn’t be better.
Since being called up from Triple-A Buffalo, Turner is batting .333 in 51 at-bats with a .393 OBP and a .490 SLG. Turner has made the most of his new-found playing time and he is showing no signs of cooling down.
In his last ten games, Turner is batting .383 with six runs scored and 12 RBI in 34 at-bats. He has drawn four walks and struck out four times.
Turner has also impressed with the glove, flashing some good range and a strong and accurate arm to go with it.
I don’t know how long this is going to last, but for now I’m going to enjoy the ride.
