I came across this quote via MetsBlog from Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports:
“Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, whom the club would prefer to keep through the summer, has told friends he would love to sign with the Angels when he becomes a free agent after the season…While Reyes might look good in manager Mike Scioscia’s system, Angels owner Arte Moreno is unlikely to approach Reyes’ asking price if Reyes does indeed demand a Carl Crawford-type contract (seven years, $142 million).”
If nothing else, this shows Reyes, for whatever reason, is now inclined to consider playing for other teams besides the Mets.
This was one of the chances the Front Office took by not signing their All Star shortstop before the season started as Reyes wanted. This is usually the end result when a player says either sign me before the season starts or talk to my agent after the season ends when I’m a free agent.
Most players who say they don’t want to negotiate during the season, actually mean what they say. So now the only way Jose Reyes remains a Met is only if the Mets outbid all the other interested parties, and if you think Carlos Beltran is getting a lot of attention now, wait until the 28-year old catalyst, Jose Reyes, hits the open market.
In the meantime, one thing is certain for now ,and that it that the Mets are 100% certain they will not trade Jose Reyes according to sources.
