Looks like I’m not the only one who thinks Jose Reyes has MVP potential. Check out this great article by Adam Rubin of the Daily News. In the article he quotes Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, and David Wright, who all acknowledge what Jose Reyes means to the team.
David Wright: "You look at Jose and he sets the tone. That’s not knocking any of the other guys, because you can make strong cases for those guys as well. But Jose sets the tone. If he doesn’t get on base, the guys in the middle of the order can’t drive in the runs they drove in.
Carlos Beltran: "I tell him, when he doesn’t get on base, we don’t win, that’s how valuable he is. When he gets on base, even if he gets a walk, he has the potential to be on third with less than two out. That’s important. The guy behind him can get a ground ball or a fly ball and get him in. He changes the game."
An interesting fact from the article is that the Mets went 23-27 (.460) in games Reyes did not record a hit, and they went 74-38 (.661) in games in which he did.
