Steve Gelbs of SNY reported during Game 2 of Monday night’s doubleheader with the Atlanta Braves that an MRI on New York Mets left-hander Joey Lucchesi’s left elbow showed a “significant” UCL tear.

The Mets sent Lucchesi for a second opinion on Tuesday, and that has confirmed a full tear of the UCL, and the left-hander will undergo season ending Tommy John surgery on Thursday.

Lucchesi was placed on the 10-day injured list with elbow inflammation on Saturday afternoon. The lefty threw 5.1 innings on Friday night against the Nationals, giving up four hits, two walks, and striking out five.

Over the course of the 2021 season, he is 1-4 with a 4.46 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 41 strikeouts through 38.1 IP. After struggling early on in the season, Lucchesi has started to turn a corner, posting a 2.28 ERA and 29 strikeouts over his past seven outings.

Lucchesi adds to the list of injuries woes the Mets have had this season. It was a rough Monday for the club as they also sent Robert Gsellman and Jeurys Familia to the injured list. Zack Scott and Sandy Alderson will absolutely be on the hunt for pitching reinforcements over the next few weeks.
