New Mets’ manager Carlos Beltran spoke with reporters at the Winter Meetings on Tuesday and said that Jeurys Familia has “lost almost 20 pounds” this offseason.

“To me, that shows me that he wants to prove himself this year,” Beltran said regarding his weight loss. “There’s no doubt that he wants to get back to the Familia that we all know.”

Familia, 30, is coming off a rough 2019 season in which he registered a 5.70 ERA, 4.88 FIP, and 1.73 WHIP with 9.45 K/9 as compared to 6.30 BB/9.

That was certainly disappointing after the Mets signed him to a three-year, $30 million contract at last year’s Winter Meetings. In 2018, he had a much lower ERA (3.13) and walk rate (3.5 BB/9).
