New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson addressed the media in Milwaukee before the game on Friday to talk about the health of closer Jeurys Familia.

Familia had surgery Friday afternoon and is expected to be out for several months and could possibly miss the rest of the 2017 season.

Little details on the surgery yet other than that it wasn’t for thoracic outlet syndrome and was for a blood clot in the right arm pit.

Huge blow for Familia and the team.

Original Report – May 11

Jeurys Familia has been diagnosed with an arterial clot in his right shoulder, the Mets announced this afternoon. Familia will head to St. Louis tomorrow to be examined by Dr. Robert Thompson, the doctor who performed Matt Harvey‘s Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery last year. Surgery is a possibility, the team says.

Familia has been heavily worked since returning from his domestic violence suspension in mid-April. He has already made 11 appearances in 18 games since being activated.

Last night, he took the loss, giving up four runs on two walks and four hits. He has a 3.86 ERA on the season with three saves.

During the 2016 season, Familia posted a 2.55 ERA over 78 appearances with a league-high 51 saves and has been a consistent force out of the pen since 2014.

This is, of course, a huge blow to a team already struggling with injuries. The Mets’ bullpen is 20th in baseball with a 4.29 ERA. Addison Reed, who has pitched quite well since joining the Mets in 2015, will step into the closer role, but this injury may send the front office to the trade market.
