Buffalo Bisons 10, Rochester Red Wings 3
Jeurys Familia ended his 2012 season on a high note as the young right-hander earned the win in one of his better performances of the season as the Bisons outslugged the Red Wings 10-3 at Frontier Field in Rochester last night.
Familia pitched struck out a season high nine batters and walked just one in seven innings of work in what is presumably his final start of the season according to the team. He allowed three runs on the night and scattered eight hits while throwing 63 of his 104 pitches for strikes and he got stronger as the game wore on retiring eight of the last ten batters he faced. C.J. Nitkowski and Andrew Carpenter each pitched a scoreless inning of relief out of the bullpen.
Offensively, the Bisons exploded for ten runs including home runs from Fred Lewis, his 13th, and Josh Satin who knocked out his 14th of the season. Catcher Mike Nickeas went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI and is batting .349 since being demoted to Buffalo after the Mets acquired Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox. Matt Tuiasosopo and Josh Rodriguez each contributed with a pair of hits.
Herd Rumblings: In addition to Jeurys Familia who accomplished the feat last night, only one other Bisons pitcher in the last 17 seasons has started 28 games in a single year (Dillon Gee, 2010). The Bisons record for starts in a season is 29, set by Dave Johnson (1988) and matched by Dorn Taylor (1990) and Tim Wakefield (1994). Fred Lewis extended his hit streak to nine games on Thursday night, a personal season best.
