New York Mets reliever Jeurys Familia has begun his throwing program in Port St. Lucie according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

The closer for the Mets the past two seasons is still weeks away from returning after having surgery in May for a blood clot in his right arm pit.

Original Report – June 13

In a report from Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News, injured Mets closer Jeurys Familia will visit Dr. Robert Thompson this Friday. Thompson is the surgeon who removed the arterial clot in Familia’s pitching shoulder in May.

If all goes well during the check-up, Familia may be cleared to being a throwing program soon thereafter.

As reported by Ackert, the Mets organization remains hopeful Familia can return at some point this season. At this time, no one has set a target date or timeline detailing when Familia could return.

Due to his suspension and arterial clot, Familia has been limited to 11 games this year.

From 2014 – 2016, Familia had led all major league relievers in both appearances (230) and innings (233.0).
