Jeff McNeil left Wednesday’s game in the bottom of the third inning after crashing into the left field wall while making a stellar catch. The Mets reported McNeil has a left-knee contusion, which can sideline a player for two-four weeks. McNeil stayed in the game for the remainder of the inning after preventing an extra-base hit from Donovan Walton but was taken out of the ballgame and replaced with pinch-hitter Travis Jankowski in the bottom half of the inning.

One could say that making a play like that, down 9-1 wasn’t the smartest idea, but it just goes to show how much of a workhorse McNeil is. It appeared that McNeil slammed both his knee and his face into the wall, and went into the dugout for further testing.

With the Mets’ pitching staff already banged up, the team can’t afford to lose the .321 hitter who’s been hot with the bat of late. McNeil missing any length of time will be hard to stomach. If McNeil’s injury is serious, Luis Guillorme will be the everyday starting second baseman with Jankowski moving up to the rotating fourth outfield spot.
