Jacob deGrom is off to a good start in the month of June as he tossed his second consecutive quality start in the team’s 5-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies in their series opener on Friday night.
DeGrom, 30, tossed six innings on the night, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out 10 Rockies on the night. It was his first double-digit strikeout performance since April 3 of this season when he collected 14 against the Miami Marlins and third of 2019.
The reigning CY Young award winner put his team in a position to win but the bullpen failed him and the Mets yet again. Jacob spoke of the frustration of the night’s loss following the game on Friday.
“The goal is to win baseball games and when we don’t, everybody’s frustrated,” deGrom said. “Still a lot of baseball left and hopefully we can start stringing those [wins] together where it’s five or six and go from there. But it’s kind of [been] step forward, step back.” (NY Post)
It has been a frustrating year all-around for the team, deGrom seemingly has righted his ship after a rough season as he tossed his eighth quality start of the year against Colorado.
He has recorded 35 double-digit strikeout starts in his career now, entering last night only seven other pitchers had at least three double-digit strikeout games this season. Those 35 games are second-most by a Mets pitcher in their first 152 starts to Dwight Gooden who had 37.
DeGrom also now has put together 14 double-digit strikeout games since the start of last season which is good enough for second most in the National League and ranks fifth in baseball among such starts since the beginning of the 2014 season.
In his six innings of work, deGrom tossed 112 pitches, 80 of which landed for strikes as he took the loss with his record falling to 3-6 on the season. His ERA stands at 3.45 with a WHIP of 1.15.
The starting rotation as of late continues to do their job only to be seemingly let down by the bullpen, offense or both. Something has to give as the team tries to string together some wins to stay in the mix in the National League East.
