Jacob deGrom took another step in his progression Saturday, throwing 20 pitches in an inning of live batting practice to Mets minor leaguers in Port St. Lucie.

“You kind of wait and see how he recovers tomorrow,” manager Buck Showalter said. “It’s like the imaging; you start with an X-ray, and then you go to the different ones. Today went really well.”

DeGrom is yet to pitch this year after an injury-shortened season in 2021. Fellow ace Max Scherzer is also on his way back, with a return coming as soon as next week. While deGrom is further behind, he continues to progress in the right direction. He’s expected to return in July, though that date has gradually been pushed back.

DeGrom will throw another BP session in the coming days and then possibly make a minor league rehab start.

“I’ve got a perfect scenario where he might fall, and so far it’s followed that,” Showalter said.
